Next step

It's crazy how, once dipping a toe back into the adoption world, the speed the roller coaster starts off with!

We had a call from the adoption team in guernsey yesterday about our "options" it's sort of complicated but I will try and outline them as best as I can.

So to avoid only one of us adopting (guernsey law at present) and one having adoption rights we can either get Cornwall to send our PAR to guernsey team and they will support us in family finding nationally. Or Cornwall could try and place one for there children with us and guernsey would support post adoption. I still have family in Cornwall so this would mean we could keep the connection for holidays etc. Either of these options would be great for us as we would both be the adoptive parents.

If guernsey had a child for us we could still adopt and accept  the fact that one of us would adopt and one would have parental responsibility. This would be an ok option as I think the law will change over here. There is a lot happening about equal marriage and lgbtq rights at the moment.

We have also been asked to go on bbc guernsey radio this Monday and are doing an interview with the press on Friday. Keeping our identities as private as possible (this is a very small island).

I don't really know how I feel about the speed with which this is moving, our house isn't even ready yet and I thought it would take a lot longer to be able to even start looking for matches. Also I think we have spent a lot of time talking about how maybe we should wait for a few years and enjoy just being us for a bit. But I think that was just a protective thing. I know now that having a family is a really high priority for me and something I am desperate to start.

This will still be a long journey and I know there will be a lot of ups and downs but it feels more right now than it ever did.

Third assessment session done

We have just finished our third session with our social worker. Today I finished off going over my family history etc. it is a strange experience really, I don't spend a lot of time thinking about my past or how it affects me now. I had a relatively simple homelike I think but was badly bullied at secondary school. It's strange going over things and is sort of cathartic really. It's funny hearing someone else relay your information back to you. Lesley is lovely and seems to really connect to us and I thinks finds us vaguely amusing ( think that's a positive!?) she did manage to reflect back to me that I use the word "control" a lot and now I feel very aware of it ... Also we had an odd moment when we were talking about my expectations of other. Neither off us could articulate what we were trying to say. I think we're matched .....

this feels like the closest and most real we've got to being dads .... Little ones social workers came to visit yesterday and we spoke about him for about two hours. It was a gloriously sunny evening in our back garden, where we got married 4 years ago, and we found out all about him. It was odd because as we spoke it kept feeling more and more that this was our son, even the stuff that is challenging about his behaviors I was starting to feel protective over him. It is strange to try and put into words how connected and attached we both feel towards him - we had to stop ourselves from just saying yes there and then. We took the dogs for a LONG walk, talk over every aspect, the "challenges" we may face and how we would approach them. We both ended the walk sure that this boy could be our son. Second opinion

After 17 home visits over 5 months we have just had our last meeting before panel in TEN DAYS! Second opinion was painless and it is nice to feel really ready for panel. The SW asked a few questions that she had from reading our report and clarified a few areas. She was very friendly and it was good to meet a new SW as ours is retiring after our panel (no reflection on us I hope!) It is an odd feeling to be at this point. To start with panel seems like some obscure mountain that you never reach the top of. But now we're nearly there. Very much looking forward to it and to the next step.
